BSH uses for the first time packaging protection made of Styropor® Ccycled®

From April 2021, BSH Hausgeräte GmbH will be using Styropor®, for which a raw material made from chemically recycled plastic waste has been used, for the first time as the packaging material for selected large appliances, particularly those of the luxury brand Gaggenau. The intensive cooperation between the two companies makes an active contribution to sustainability and the circular economy.

The succesful cooperation 


The collaboration between BSH Hausgeräte GmbH and BASF began at a plastics trade fair and continued through a joint pilot project at the end of 2019. Now, in April 2021, Styropor® Ccycled® will be used for the first time as a packaging material for the transport of selected electrical appliances from the luxury brand Gaggenau. Initially, the resource-saving Styropor® packaging will be used at the BSH Group's production site in Dillingen. The long-term goal is to transport all large appliances worldwide in resource-saving packaging. BSH already took an important step towards its sustainability strategy at the end of 2020: all of the company's products will be manufactured in a CO2-neutral manner. By using Styropor® packaging based on chemically recycled plastic waste, BSH and BASF are jointly implementing their sustainability goals and contributing to a cross-industry circular economy.

The ChemCycling® method 

Styropor® Ccycled® packaging is based on chemically recycled plastic waste. In the chemical recycling process, plastic waste is converted into pyrolysis oil, which is fed in at the beginning of BASF's composite production and thus partly replaces fossil raw materials. At the end, a mass balance approach is used to assign the recycled content to the end products. The Ccycled® products do not differ in quality from conventional Styropor® packaging made from fossil raw materials. On the contrary: they are just as pressure-resistant and additionally reduce the CO2 footprint as well as the consumption of limited fossil resources.


The use of Styropor® Ccycled® reduces the carbon footprint by at least 50 percent compared to conventional transport protection. The comparison is based on an LCA study for a transport packaging for household appliances. A standard specification with a density of 30 kg/m³ is used for the calculation. The packaging solution consists of six parts with a weight of 0.9 kg.
